Pre-Conference TutorialsAttendees have told us they’d like to see more depth, so this year, UTC is offering tutorials that are more in line with the high level of experience of our average participant. Tutorials are a great way to jump start your UTC TELECOM 2009 experience and learn about a new topic. Attendance at the tutorials of your choice is included in the Super Pass Registration, so don’t miss out! Jay Adams, Electrical Engineer, Transtector Presentation Brett Kilbourne, Director of Regulatory Services & Associate Counsel, Utilities Telecom Council Presentation With the growth of new telecom services, utility infrastructure is under attack again at the FCC; but that isn’t the only issue in this complex field. Business models, technology and regulations are all undergoing significant change. On the business front, there is increasing demand for attachments at a time when infrastructure is undergoing dramatic changes as new codes go into effect and systems continue to be built out and built up. On the technology front, utilities are implementing new management systems to track attachments, and they’re accommodating access for a dizzying array of wireless attachments and smart-grid equipment. And the FCC is considering fundamental changes to its regulations that could establish uniform regulated rates for broadband attachments, ILEC attachments, and wireless attachments, as well as impose a host of “best practices” for access for pole attachments. You need to learn the details from experts and network with your peers to discover opportunities and overcome challenges that lie ahead. Hans vanMeeteren, Executive Consultant, KEMA It seems as though just the word "smart" can generate a response in your management. Everyone seems to be discussing the smart grid/smart network concept. But what do you really know about the migration from here to there, and more importantly, defining where "there" is, exactly? If you are in this position, know this - you are not alone. UTC has found that “smart grid” will have different meanings and different pathways for almost every utility; however, there are some core issues that the term encompasses. To give energy organizations a starting point and framework, UTC partnered with KEMA to develop a helpful report entitled, "Smart Grids: Building a Strategic Technology Roadmap." The report presents a framework to start planning your organization’s smart grid vision and overall roadmap to the next generation. . The report includes detailed guidance for organizing, for planning and for the creation of work groups. Presented by the report’s authors, this tutorial is an opportunity to hear about how the smart grid may become a reality for your energy utility. Tony Todora, Senior Systems Architect, Motorola, Inc. A variety of technologies exist to meet the needs for wireless access and backhaul efforts within Smart Grid projects. This session will provide an in-depth look at point to point, point to multipoint, mesh, and WLAN solutions for a variety of Smart Grid applications such as AMI backhaul, SCADA and video surveillance. Ron Bilodeau, Staff Contracting Agent, NV Energy Presentation Chris Towery, Product Line Manager, Corning Incorporated Presentation As the bandwidth boom continues unabated, so does the importance of optical fiber in telecommunications networks. Fiber is replacing or augmenting copper in data centers, local area networks, campus networks and access networks. The latest fiber cabling options will be reviewed and the application for which they are best suited. Hardware for delivering different services over fiber will also be reviewed, including how to utilize media conversion and CWDM technologies to deliver multiple services over fiber. This technical tutorial is suitable for communication engineers, managers and others in the communication industry interested in knowing more about transmitting T1/E1, T3/E3, SONET, Ethernet and other protocols over fiber optics as a communication medium. Cynthia Brumfield, Director of Research, Utilities Telecom Council Presentation Based on the major UTC Research project that examines the details of the utility telecom and IT market, this session will review the updated results from a completely new look at what is now a much bigger community . For attendees, this is the best session to hear what projects other utilities are undertaking compared with your own energy utility’s capital expenses. The survey will highlight the trends in overall spending by utilities for 2009 and beyond. Vendors that are exhibiting are encouraged to attend as well, to understand how their products and services fit into utility’s planning budgets. |
